Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between early warning indicators in the monetary sector and banking risks in Iraq, by reviewing both theoretical and empirical frameworks and assessing the effectiveness of key monetary indicators in predicting the risks facing banking institutions. The significance of the research lies in its focus on early warning tools and their role in promoting financial stability and enhancing the efficiency of monetary and regulatory policies, especially in light of increasing economic challenges. The study is based on the hypothesis that there is a statistically significant relationship between early warning indicators and banking risks. The long-run results revealed an inverse relationship between the exchange rate and credit risk, indicating that exchange rate fluctuations are among the most influential indicators in forecasting banking risk levels in Iraq over time. In contrast, the relationship between money supply and credit risk was found to be positive, suggesting that long-term monetary expansion contributes to higher lending activity and, consequently, greater credit risk. This highlights the central bank’s crucial role in managing liquidity to balance growth and risk control. The study recommends enhancing the capabilities of banking sector personnel through specialized training and by learning from the experiences of advanced economies in risk management.
