The extent to which internal audit procedures comply with the requirements of the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS 15): A case study of the Baghdad Soft Drinks Company
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research aims to study the extent to which internal audit procedures are consistent with the requirements of the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS 15) on revenue from contracts with customers. This is done through a practical application on the Baghdad Soft Drinks Company for the period (2019-2024). The importance of the research comes from the fact that Iraq began adopting international standards in 2021, This created fundamental challenges for local companies in aligning their accounting and control systems with these standards. The research adopted the case study approach based on an analysis of the company’s published financial statements for the period (2019-2024), Conducting a quantitative (horizontal and vertical) comparison of revenues and net profit, as well as a qualitative assessment of internal audit procedures and the extent to which they cover the requirements of (IFRS 15), Two basic hypotheses were also tested: the first relates to the existence of a gap between current practices and the required implementation, and the second assumes the impact of adopting IFRS 15 on the development of internal auditing, The results showed that the company complied with most of the essential requirements of the standard, taxes and fees were excluded from revenues, and precise policies were applied regarding discounts, And the disclosure of new accounting policies in its annual reports, and thus the data did not support the first hypothesis, i.e. no fundamental gap in application appeared, while the second hypothesis was partially confirmed, as the adoption of IFRS 15 led to expand the scope of internal audit reviews, increase coordination with the external auditor, and develop oversight and training programs. The research also recommends the necessity of preparing a detailed internal audit guide for revenues in accordance with IFRS 15, Investing in ongoing training, using technology to enhance control effectiveness, and periodically reviewing revenue policies to keep pace with any future changes in the company's business or international accounting standards.
