Abstract

This study investigates the dynamic behavior of red meat prices in global markets over the period 2004–2024, using quarterly data, with the objective of identifying the economic determinants influencing price movements in both the short and long run. The research problem arises from the persistent volatility in red meat prices and its implications for market stability and global food security, Accordingly, an econometric time-series framework is employed to examine the structural relationship between prices and their key determinants, Red meat prices are specified as the dependent variable, while production, imports, population size, and consumption are incorporated as independent variables representing the supply and demand sides of the market. Stationarity tests are conducted to determine the order of integration of the variables, followed by cointegration analysis to assess the existence of a long-run equilibrium relationship among them. The empirical findings confirm the presence of a stable long-run association between the variables. Consequently, an Error Correction Model (ECM) is estimated to capture short-run dynamics and the speed of adjustment toward equilibrium. The error correction term is found to be negative and statistically significant, indicating the system’s ability to correct short-term deviations and restore long-run equilibrium. The results further reveal heterogeneous impacts of the explanatory variables on price fluctuations, underscoring the importance of balanced production and trade policies to mitigate volatility and enhance stability in global markets.
