Abstract

This study aims to measure and examine the role of financial capability indicators in mitigating financial fragility among Iraqi commercial banks listed on the Iraq Stock Exchange during the period (2015–2024), based on a purposive sample of (10) commercial banks. The study is grounded in the premise that financial capability represents a fundamental basis for supporting bank soundness and enhancing the robustness of its financial position, given its association with the efficiency of asset and liability management, the adequacy of the financing structure, and the bank’s ability to direct credit in a manner consistent with the requirements of liquidity, risk, stability, and the quality of asset allocation. From this perspective, the study addressed the relationship between financial capability and financial fragility as a relationship that reflects the bank’s ability to limit areas of financial weakness and reduce the probability of exposure to imbalances that may threaten its stability. The results showed a significant inverse effect of financial capability on mitigating financial fragility in the long run, and the error correction term (COINTEQ) confirmed that short-run deviations are corrected gradually and return to the long-run equilibrium path. The main recommendations emphasized the need to strengthen financial capability by improving the efficiency of asset allocation, restructuring portfolios towards higher-quality allocations while taking the degree of risk into consideration, regulating the financing mix, and directing credit towards projects that support financial stability and mitigate fragility.
