The Impact of Pre-Market Prices on Stock Returns and Risks: An Empirical Study of a Number of Technology Companies Listed on the NASDAQ Market
Main Article Content
Abstract
The current study aims to demonstrate the impact of the pre-market price on the stock return and risk of technological companies listed on the NASDAQ market. The study adopted a descriptive-analytical approach to determine whether there is a clear impact of pre-market prices on stock returns and risks through their effect on daily closing prices. The study population consists of technological companies in the NASDAQ market, and forty (40) of the most active and heavily traded companies during the pre-market period in this market were selected. The study used the daily pre-market stock prices of these companies to measure the independent variable, while the closing stock prices, the average daily returns of stock prices at closing, and their standard deviation were used to measure the dependent variable. To prove the research hypotheses, and through the analysis of correlation and regression relationships between the variables using the (Stata) program, the study results showed a strong, statistically significant positive effect for the relationship between pre-market prices and closing prices for the sample companies. In addition, there was a statistically significant inverse effect for the relationship between pre-market prices and stock risks for these companies. The study also concluded that there is no statistically significant effect between pre-market prices and the daily stock returns of the sample companies.
