Abstract

This study aims to analyze and measure the impact of governmental institutional quality, represented by the six governance indicators during the period (1996–2022). The study relies on panel data comprising a set of variables to explaining the relationship. The sample includes 24 developing countries was selected, based on data availability and their geographical diversity from the world. To achieve the objectives of the study, Panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag (Panel ARDL) model was employed to examine the short-run and long-run relationships between economic growth and a set of government variables. Several macroeconomic variables were included as independent variables, such as inflation and the unemployment rate. The importance of this research stems from the fact that government performance variables play a crucial role in improving economic resources in developing countries. Many developing countries possess similar economic resources, Bu the efficiency of utilizing resources largely depends on governmental quality. Accordingly, the important questions are: Do governance indicators have a significant impact on economic growth? If so, what is the best magnitude of their impact in the selected countries, and which of these indicators exerts the strongest influence?. The research hypothesis centers on the idea that the variables of political stability and controlling corruption are the most influential on the economic development in the study sample, and that this can only be achieved through the cooperation of society with good government. Empirical results reveal the existence of a long-run equilibrium relationship among the study variables. Furthermore, the findings indicate that government quality indicators have a positive and statistically significant impact on economic growth. Control of corruption and political stability have the strongest effects, they confirming the study’s hypothesis. The study recommends strengthening the quality of governmental institutions and improving governance indicators, reducing excessive reliance on external borrowing, promoting export-oriented policies, and maintaining overall macroeconomic stability in order to achieve sustainable economic growth in developing countries.
